An unlocked phone works on any compatible carrier — you can switch networks, use a local SIM abroad, and get a stronger offer when you sell it. A carrier-locked phone only accepts SIMs from the network that sold it until that carrier removes the lock. Checking which one you have takes about a minute, is free, and doesn’t require an account. Method 1 — Check in the phone’s settings (iPhone)
On any iPhone running iOS 14 or later, open Settings → General → About and scroll to Carrier Lock (called Network Provider Lock on some versions). If it says “No SIM restrictions,” the iPhone is unlocked. If it says “SIM locked” or names a carrier, it is still locked to that network. This is Apple’s own readout, so it’s reliable — no app or lookup needed.
Most Android phones don’t show lock status in settings. Some Samsung models list network-lock information under Settings → Connections, but on the majority of Android devices you’ll need the SIM test or an IMEI check below.
Method 2 — The SIM-swap test (works on any phone)
- Borrow a SIM card from a different carrier than the one the phone is on — a friend’s or family member’s SIM works fine.
- Power the phone off, swap the SIM in, and power it back on.
- If the phone gets signal and can make a call or use data, it’s unlocked.
- If you see “SIM not supported,” “SIM not valid,” “Network locked,” or an unlock-code prompt, the phone is locked to its original carrier.
- Newer eSIM-only phones (US iPhone 14 and later) have no SIM tray — try adding an eSIM from another carrier instead, or use the IMEI check.
Method 3 — Free IMEI lock check (no other SIM needed)
Every phone’s 15-digit IMEI is registered to the carrier that originally sold it, along with its lock status. Phone locked? Here’s how unlocking actually works
Only the carrier that locked the phone can unlock it, and carriers do it for free — there is no legitimate paid shortcut. In general, US carriers unlock a phone once it is fully paid off and any minimum service period is met: Verizon automatically unlocks most phones 60 days after purchase, while T-Mobile, AT&T, and prepaid brands like Metro and Boost require the device to be paid off and active for a set period before you request the unlock. The unlock request goes through the carrier’s website or support line, and on modern phones it’s applied over the air — no code entry needed on most iPhones.
One important distinction: unlocked is not the same as clean. A phone can be carrier-unlocked and still be blacklisted (reported lost or stolen), which blocks it from activating on US networks entirely. Before buying any used phone, check both.
