iCloud Activation Lock Check — Is Find My iPhone Still On?

Activation Lock is the one problem a factory reset cannot fix. If a used iPhone is still tied to the previous owner’s Apple Account, it will demand their Apple ID and password the moment you try to set it up — and without them, the phone is a paperweight no matter how clean it looks. Checking the Find My iPhone status takes under a minute, is free, and should happen before any money changes hands.

What Activation Lock actually is
Activation Lock is Apple’s anti-theft protection, and it turns on automatically whenever Find My is enabled on an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac. It ties the device’s hardware to the owner’s Apple Account. Erasing the device does not release it: after a factory reset, the setup screen asks for the original owner’s Apple ID and password (showing a partially masked email like j•••@icloud.com) and will not go past that screen without them. Android has close equivalents — Google’s Factory Reset Protection (FRP) and Samsung’s account lock — which behave the same way after a reset.
How to check on the device — do this before you buy
- Open Settings and look at the very top. If a person’s name is there, the phone is signed in to an Apple Account — tap it, then tap Find My, and check whether Find My iPhone shows On.
- Ask the seller to erase the phone in front of you: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings. iOS requires their Apple ID password to complete this, which signs the device out and removes Activation Lock at the same time.
- If the phone is already erased, go through the setup screens. If the “Hello” setup asks for a previous owner’s Apple ID with a masked email, the phone is activation locked — walk away unless the seller can unlock it on the spot.
- A phone that reaches the home screen or Wi-Fi setup with no Apple ID prompt after an erase is clear of Activation Lock.
Can you check Activation Lock by IMEI or serial number?
Not through Apple. Apple discontinued its public online Activation Lock status checker (the old icloud.com/activationlock page) back in January 2017, so any website claiming to be an “official” iCloud status check is not Apple’s. Some third-party IMEI services report an FMI ON / FMI OFF flag (FMI stands for Find My iPhone), which can be a useful early signal when you only have the IMEI — but the on-device checks above are the definitive test. How Activation Lock is removed
- On the device: the owner signs out via Settings → [their name] → Sign Out, entering their Apple ID password.
- Remotely: the previous owner signs in at icloud.com/find, selects the device, and chooses Remove from Account — this works even after the phone has been sold and shipped.
- Through Apple: with a valid proof of purchase, Apple Support can remove Activation Lock from a device you legitimately own.
- There is no legitimate paid “iCloud unlock” or bypass service. Third-party removal tools are scams, temporary hacks, or worse — if a deal depends on one, walk away.
Keep the three flags straight: Activation Lock ties a phone to an Apple Account, a carrier lock ties it to one network, and a blacklist blocks it from US networks entirely. They are independent — a phone can be clean on two and dead on the third — so a used-phone check isn’t done until you’ve looked at all three.
