About this repair

The original iPad mini's 7.9-inch 1024x768 IPS display is non-laminated, so the cracked front glass digitizer is a separate layer from the LCD and can be swapped on its own when the panel still shows a clean picture. Its Apple A5 chip, Lightning port and 4440 mAh battery all wear with age, so we rebuild loose charging ports and replace tired batteries. With no Touch ID on this first-generation mini, there is no fingerprint sensor to transfer, which keeps the digitizer job clean.

Can you replace just the cracked glass on my iPad mini 1?

Yes. Because the first-gen mini's display is not laminated, the front glass digitizer separates from the 1024x768 LCD, so if the LCD still shows a clean picture we replace only the glass and reseal it to the frame.

Does the iPad mini 1 have Touch ID that needs transferring?

No. Touch ID first appeared on the iPad mini 3, so the original mini's home button has no fingerprint sensor, and there is nothing to recalibrate after a screen repair.

Is it still worth repairing such an old iPad mini?

For light reading, a kid's tablet or a shop display, yes. A fresh battery and new glass bring the A5-based mini back to usable life, though this generation no longer receives iOS updates.
