About this repair

The original 2010 iPad uses a 9.7" 1024×768 IPS LCD with a separate front glass digitizer sitting over an air gap, so a cracked screen often only needs the glass replaced rather than the LCD beneath it. The front glass is bonded to the aluminum frame with adhesive that we heat and carefully release, and the Apple A4 board's battery is glued in and prone to swelling on a 16-year-old unit, so we replace it with care. We also clean or replace the failing 30-pin dock connector and the mechanical home button, the typical wear points on this pre-Lightning, pre-Touch ID model.

Only the glass on my original iPad cracked — do I need a whole new screen?

Probably not. The 2010 iPad is not laminated; the front glass digitizer is a separate layer over the 9.7" LCD with an air gap, so if the LCD still displays cleanly we can replace just the cracked outer glass.

My iPad 1 won't charge or only charges at certain angles — what's wrong?

The original iPad uses the old 30-pin dock connector, which wears out and collects lint after years of use. We clean or replace the 30-pin charging port, which usually restores reliable charging without touching the board.

Is it worth replacing the battery in a 2010 iPad?

It can be, if you want to keep it running, but the glued-in battery on a unit this old often swells and pushes the glass up. We replace it and reseat the display safely; just note the A4 chip and 256MB of RAM mean it stays a slow, vintage device.
